Teen-Age Diary Secrets / Blue Ribbon Comics v2 #4, 1949 - Matt Baker enters the romance genre, building an impressive body of work over the next decade. In his first story, "I Set a Trap for a Wolf", a girl tries to tame a neighborhood boy with the reputation for running around (this tale was later retitled "I Tempted the Wrong Boy" and reprinted in both
Pictorial Romances #7 and
Teen-Age Temptations #9). The second tale,
"I Should Have Played Hard-to-Get", features a teenage girl shuttling between two boys before focusing on her studies (this was later retitled "I Tried to Burn the Candle at Both Ends" and reprinted in both
Wartime Romances #1 and
Diary Secrets #25. Matt Baker's artwork is better than most during this period, but well below his usual standards. His drawings are fairly conservative and his layouts stiff and repetitive. By contrast, Baker's cover excels in both areas. Other artists in this golden age romance comic include Chuck Miller. This is 2 of 3
